Video editing can make a fun day at the park seem like an adrenaline-pumping action movie or turn the most epic events seem dull as dishwater.

Essentially, video editing gives the raw footage a makeover and truly brings it to life, or, you know, does completely the other way around depending on what the plot demands!
A Personal Anecdote
Let me tell you a little story. A few years back, I was helping a friend edit a surprise birthday party video. We had hours of joyful, fun footage, but it didn’t exactly scream ‘touching’. It was in the editing room (or, my tiny apartment, to be more precise) where this amateur footage became something more. We cut away the extraneous bits, added some transitions, slow-motion for the surprise moment itself, background score during the speeches, color graded the entire thing for a warm, nostalgic feel. In the end, the video managed to bring more than a few tears at the party. Guess who was the star that night (not to toot my own horn!).

Turns out, my anecdotal evidence and experiences aren’t just flukes. There’s actually a ton of science behind this. Research from the University of Amsterdam suggests that the manner in which shots are edited together influences how viewers perceive and interpret the narrative of the video (van Driel & Smit, 2011). So, it’s not just about what’s in the video, but how it’s all stitched together a.k.a. edited.
